This old well is usually busy at this time of the morning...maybe something is up? Deserted...even the authorities seem to have slipped away. Perhaps this is why...a German armoured column descends rapidly on the hamlet and they look like they mean business with these armoured rocket launchers... ...and rows of machine guns. This used to be such a desirable place to live until war arrived. Who's going to gather these crops and store this hay? Hang on..those aren't Germans over the river... The battlefield, north at the top. Russians...looks like Ivan has come to play. Ruski mortars. Blimey there's load of 'em all of a sudden! Strelkovy, tons of artillery... Su76's lurking in the woods as well..the Jerries will need a bit more than a few rockets to cope with this lot! Looks like they found something...heavy mortars and some grenadiers in the south...still, might not be enough to deal with the Russian horde. Perhaps these StuG's will help balance things out a little. They will need to coem up with the good today. And with a little help from some friends... The final deployment are some Grenadiers on the extreme right flank. And battle commences! Germans in the south run to the edge of the field and set up. Those in the central hamlet prepare to enter the buildings and create a strongpoint. The Tigers risk los artillery on turn one and a red gun is immediately destroyed But the Tigers are perilously exposed. The StuG's decide to play it safe and let the heavy tanks do the dirty work. The German heavy mortars can only regard the advancing mass but prepare to fire next turn. They try and look busy though. Suddenly, perilously low over the village rooftops, Russian planes appear! Looks like those leaves haven't stopped the pilots spotting them as the Russians begin their first turn of airborne carnage. The southern landscape is suddenly swamped with running Russians. Machine guns, AT rifles, AT guns, all heading directly towards enemy lines. The AT guns deploy to pick off any stray tanks. The north looks very much like the south, Soldiers move in the wind like blades of grass. Blimey. And it starts. A Russian volley of mortars and rifles pins and destroys much of the German southern defense. In the centre, Russian sappers armed with flamethrowers approach the buildings through the woods and fields. Its a similar story in the north, but accurate German heavy mortars thin out the numbers before the Strelkovy can reach the cover of the woods. The Germans grenadiers are joined in the front line by the Tigers. Russian support hovers in the background. Flying tanks! And no German AA in sight! Ouch! A sorry sight for German eyes. Is that pilot waving to the survivors?? In the south things are no better for the Germans as the grenadiers are routed. The woods are controlled. Incredible! Justin checks to see if a building is inhabited and one of Chris' German grenadier sections, lost for months, is at last discovered skulking! The Stug's remain static as the Russians close. An AT gun is left in smoke from one of the Stugs. The northern front line. In the south, German mortars come under attack from their Russian counterparts. The rockets aren't having a great day what with poor Los and ineffective rolling. The Russians planes are busy again. And yet again have more Germans running from their vehicles. The pioneers approach the Stugs under cover. The Russians penetrate into the southern flanks. Next stop is the German support. And then maybe the German tumble dryer. Last stand saloon as the mortars prepare their requiem. Its all going down. The Russians are blasted at close range but they are still coming. The inevitable assault on the mortars goes in. Rifles vs mortar tubes and spades. The mortars crumble and after some discussion the game is conceded. The Germans had a theoretical chance but the result seems clear in the Russians favour as they dominate one flank and heavily threaten another. Paul's first game is a baptism of fire. Welcome to FOW. Good game gentlemen. |
